Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
If you visit my school, you will see an innovative public elementary school with a very diverse student body. Fifty-eight percent of our students are considered low income, ten percent are homeless and twenty-four percent are English learners. We adopted the "Leader In Me" program, so you will find polite and helpful students in every grade, who are developing their leadership potential through a variety of roles and activities.
My first grade class is made up of twenty-two enthusiastic six and seven year-olds, who are full of energy and constant wonder about everything around them.
These wonderful students work hard for a majority of each day learning to read and write, and then integrate these skills into science, social studies and even math! Each student sets learning goals and works hard to meet them. My students love to celebrate the progress of their classmates, as well as their own success.
My Project
For many adults, the thought of writing an article or book is overwhelming. Sitting hunched over a desk for long periods of time and having to keep focused might cause stress, backaches, headaches, or worse. First grade students have similar experiences when writing sentences and paragraphs.
Recent research shows that being able to stand, move or fidget helps to increase focus, comfort and health.
By having flexible seating options, my students will experience improved metabolism and posture, but most importantly will have higher motivation and engagement to do their best work. I am hoping to receive 4 balance ball chairs for flexible seating options and two six-drawer carts to organize and make material easily accessible in our reading and writing centers.
