I have up to 28 Kinder-6th grade students who receive special education support in my Resource Room. This Title I school is located in a low income area serving a majority of Latino and Vietnamese immigrant families.
Students have varying disabilities (ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, etc) and would benefit from being in a structured classroom with set routines, organized materials, and flexible arrangements.
Despite the challenges students may face outside of school, they come with smiles on their faces. They continue to build their love for learning each day and are eager to learn about the world they live in.
My Project
My students have varying disabilities, many of which affect their ability to learn how to read, whether it be dyslexia or their inability to sustain focus. Therefore, reading has been difficult and laborious for my students.
I am constantly looking for different ways to make reading fun for students and help them become lifelong readers.
Currently, students have the option of using bean bags and yoga balls; however, adding different options of how they want to sit in my room as we read helps build motivation and engagement for these students and also reflects how we read as adults - how many of us enjoy sitting still in a chair with our book on a desk when we read for fun?! These stools will help build autonomy in my classroom by providing students with choice and will allow my students to wiggle as they read!
