My students are bright eyed, excited, eager to learn 6 and 7 year olds. Some days they're astronauts when science takes them to space. Some days they're authors when they write their own stories. Some days they're engineers, building with legos together during choice time. Some days they're adventurers, enjoying the stories of Jack and Annie and their tree house.
My students are more than their test score, reading level, or ability to focus.
My students are continually moving - reading under desks, doing math on white boards, writing at the table they find most comfortable. They are also continually growing, applying new math skills and phonics skills every day, sometimes without them even realizing that they've learned something new.
Our school, tucked away in the Washington trees, is a place that fosters kindness, respect, helpfulness, and belonging. We truly believe that every child is capable of success. Our students feel at home, and like our classroom and school are where they belong. We care about each other, and we care about learning!
My Project
In a classroom of 6 and 7 year olds, we are constantly on the move. Many times a day we are up dancing, jumping, working around the room, reading under desks, acting out vocabulary words, and more. My kids are active and learn best by moving their bodies. This also means that during our down time, such as sitting to write, sitting to read, and sitting to do math, those little bodies are still in motion.
My students need furniture and tools to help them manage their tiny, wiggly bodies!
With wobble stools, wiggle cushions, soft cushions, and chair bands, my students will work in the way they need. Some students may choose to sit on the ground with a cushion. Some students may choose to wobble on a stool while writing. Some students may need to bounce or swing their feet using the bands. There are so many ways these tools can be used to help support the focus and minds of my little ones!
With your help our classroom can continue to be a room full of movement, but a room full of movement that is channeled in a controlled and safe manner with the furniture and tools listed.
