My Students

The students at our school are from a variety of socio-economic backgrounds. Many of the students in my particular classes come from lower income families. I have a couple classes of students who have a few English Language Learners also. I teach students in special education who have disabilities that make it challenging for them to be successful in school without adequate specially designed instruction and support

Many of my students benefit from having choice and will enjoy having the choice of sitting in non-traditional seating that is more comfortable for them or provides movement breaks of some kind.

Some struggle with attention challenges due to a disability or due to trauma. I have noticed that having flexible preferred seating allows them to focus more and/or get their wiggles out (if sitting on a wiggly chair or cushion).

My Project

A friend of mine gave me a super soft bouncy chair recently, and my students love to take turns using it to do their schoolwork. The engagement level on schoolwork has shot way up when students are using this chair. I also noticed some unique flexible seating options in the library that students seems to love to use. When I saw these options, I decided to create a Donors Choose project for some similar seating.

Giving students a choice on which seat to use helps them to feel ownership in their learning and help them to focus more than they tend to on a traditional hard classroom chair.

Several of my students experience attention deficit disorder, which makes sitting still extremely hard. When they are sitting on a chair that bounces a little or allows movement of some kind, they are able to get their wiggles out and focus better.
