Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a TK-6th grade special education resource teacher and am lucky enough to share my classroom with some truly incredible students. As a resource teacher, I have the unique opportunity to work with many of the same students year after year and not only see them grow, but watch them overcome some unbelievable struggles in order to do so.
The students in my classroom have a variety of learning and sensory needs, and flexible seating provides them with the opportunity to meet those needs while remaining engaged in their learning.
Flexible seating is the practice of allowing and providing many seating options for students. This means having different types of seats like yoga balls, wiggle cushions, wobble stools, chairs, couches, stools, etc. This also means giving students the freedom to choose where they sit. Research has shown that "flexible seating and flexible learning spaces encourage movement within the classroom. Without this movement, brain activity is reduced when as body becomes inactive thus students become motionless and learning does not take place" (Harvey & Kenyon, 2013, p. 3).
The Wiggle Stools and Bouncy Bands for the chairs will allow even my most active students to get their wiggles out, while still maintaining focus on their learning. The Surf Portable Lap Desks provide comfy floor options for my students who need an alternative to the traditional classroom desk. With this funding of this project, I will to be able to provide these flexible seating options to my current students as well as future students.
