Each year I teach kind, lively, and inquisitive first grade students. They love to read, count collections, and conduct science experiments. When I teach students how to explain their thinking, they rise to the occasion and want to share their opinions on every topic! Once I read a book that not everyone enjoyed, and the students had a lively discussion on the qualities of good literature. Often we vote to make class decisions, and they are encouraged to justify their reasoning to persuade others. I love having a class of independent thinkers who can share their opinions respectfully and joyfully.
This fall I will have an inclusion class, meaning that students with Individual Education Plans are grouped in my class, as well as general education students.
Students with learning disabilities may sometimes have other challenges, such as Attention Deficit Disorder or sensory disorders. Each year, there are children that have difficulty sitting as they work. Some students stand, and some lie on the floor with a clipboard. Providing some choices gives them some sense of control and the opportunity to govern themselves.
My Project
Children need up to 3 hours of physical exercise and opportunities for movement each day. However, with recess time cut to 15 minutes, students are increasingly wiggly and have difficulty controlling their bodies. In first grade, I see students each year that exhibit symptoms of ADHD or a Sensory Integration Disorder. However, because of their age and confusion about the average attention span of first graders, they are undiagnosed. It often falls to me to provide accommodations as I see fit to meet their needs.
The Kore WOBBLE seats are designed to allow students to move as they sit at their desks.
Rather than dangerously tip their chairs back, they can move their body and receive the stimulation they need as the Wobble seat moves with them. Students may use the Wobble stability cushions to wiggle and receive sensory input as they sit on the floor. The Softzone cushions will provide seating choices for students without disabilities. These can be adapted to use with the chairs as well, and they will be appreciated by students as an alternative to the hard floor.
Providing these choices will make my students comfortable, give them some sensory stimulation that they need, and provide choices that give students a greater sense of control. These purchases will grant alternative seating to everyone, with choices included that meet the needs of students with disabilities.
