Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a wonderful group of first graders from Keizer, Oregon. They come to school so full of energy and excitement. They are ready to jump into whatever we are learning next.

Many of my 26 students come from a background of poverty and do not have access to a lot of materials and experiences at home.

So we try to provide them with as many enriching experiences as we can at school. Even the smallest new thing, a new book or activity, can really make their day.

My Project

More and more there is less chance for kids to get up and move. During the day we only have one recess and I try to incorporate movement into my teaching as much as I can. My students need the chance to move and wiggle while still learning. Having six wiggle cushions, a set of floor seats, mat and alternative places in the room to sit will help give them that chance.

Many of my students are coming from very difficult backgrounds.

They come to school tired, hungry and upset from what has happened to them at home. To help them focus on learning I would like to create a corner of my room where students can go to take a break. In this area they could practice yoga, use the various requested fidget items or sit and read in a Tepee to calm themselves on those hard days.
