My Students

My students live in Colorado, in a northern suburban area of Denver. We are a public school and therefore funding for unique ideas is lacking. Despite our lack of funding, the students are able to work hard and achieve amazing levels. Like many other classrooms across the nation, we strive to create a classroom environment that enhances learning so that children can reach their full potential.

These students are reaching great heights in spite of the limited funding.

As teenagers, they're yearning for opportunities to be active, not only mentally, but physically as well. They need an opportunity to move about.

My Project

Allowing the students flexibility to choose where they would like to sit is becoming increasingly more prominent. This not only allows students to work in an environment that is comfortable to them, and away from potential distractions, but also promotes physical activity while they work. A research study by Dr. Chuck Hillman at the University of Illinois shows increased brain activity for students who are physically active as opposed to those who are sitting still.

This project is designed to bring an increased sense of autonomy, a variety of seating options into my classroom, each of which will encourage physical activity, all in an effort to increase their brain engagement while working.

The wobble stools will do just this!

We are also looking to add headphones to my classroom. While some students have a pair of their own headphones that they bring to class, many do not. However, when incorporating online tools such as EdPuzzle, where students can work at their own pace while answering questions about educational videos, it becomes difficult for those who do not have headphones to hear the content and to concentrate while others are listening to the same video. Providing headphones for the students will give them the opportunity to listen to educational clips and work at their own pace without being distracted by classmates who are working at different paces.
