Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are creative, take initiative in their own learning, and curious about the world! They love hands-on, engaging projects that challenge them to think outside of the box in not only their solutions, but the way they communicate the information that they just explored. They are enthusiastic learners and are full of questions. They inspire me to do my best!
Many students in my classroom have no access to technology at home, and our school provides them with the opportunities to gain these vital 21st century skills.
Our school is set in urban Los Angeles. Many students speak two or more languages, and are the children of immigrant parents. They have a strong work ethic and work diligently to make their future a success.
Each child in my classroom absolutely loves learning. The third-grade team at my school incorporates a variety of learning styles, differentiated lesson planning, and alternative seating and learning opportunities to ensure that each student's needs are met. We also use computational thinking strategies in our lessons to get them to think. They are an amazing group of kids, and I can't wait to help them grow as citizens of the world. They are our future!
My Project
Flexible seating is a classroom movement that is here to stay. Research shows that students are more invested in their learning when they have some degree of choice and control about their environment. I currently have a few of these alternative seats in my classroom. What I have noticed is it allows students to choose where they work and allows them to move their bodies to improve their core and to get those wiggles out. Flexible seating gives them opportunities to wobble, bounce, or sit on the floor, which increases the oxygen flow to their brain and keeps their young minds alert and focused.
Flexible seating can lead to better health, higher academic performance, and improved behavior.
In the 21st century classroom, flexible seating is a must. Kids need to be comfortable and have choice in seating in order to collaborate with their peers, create a sense of community, and stimulate their sensory input. By providing flexible seating options, I hope to teach my students how to take responsibility for and choose tools that will be beneficial to their learning and development.
