I want to create a safe, engaging and educational environment where the students in my classroom want to come and learn. I teach children with special needs in grades K-5 on a Native American Indian Reservation. 100% of the student population receives free breakfast and lunch. They live in extreme poverty, often coming to school without their basic needs being met, such as wearing warm clothes, being fed, or getting a good night's rest. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day.
My Project
Remember the 'old' days when the teacher would always tell students to "sit still?" Now we know children learn better when they are able to move during instruction.
As a teacher of children with special needs, I know how important it is to create an environment to accommodate each student's individual needs.
I am slowly filling my room with flexible seating options. I have a couple of standing desks that are amazing as well as some wiggle cushions.
The requested wobble chairs and beanbag seats will replace the hard, straight-backed chairs if a student chooses to. These replacement seating options will be used during math and reading instruction. They will be such a blessing for my students with extra energy so they can wiggle while learning.
