My students need more flexible seating like Wobble stools and balance balls to maximize their engagement in learning tasks without compromising their need to move and wiggle.
What I love about the start of a new school year is the energy of my incoming class of kindergartners! They are always so eager and excited to begin this important milestone in their lives. The first day jitters don't last long as they are quick to make friends and begin the process of building a strong community of learners.
My students are proud, inquisitive, confident, and full of heart.
They take ownership of this time and place we create. They come from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and cultures. Together they build a team of tolerance, respect, and empathy.
There is not a day I am not amazed by their young minds and character. Their determination and willingness to always try inspires me. The way they make me smile and laugh is proof I have the best job in the world!
My Project
With the rise of popularity, accessibility, and research in favor of flexible seating in the classroom, I became very intrigued on how I could implement this on my own. I started with allowing students whenever possible to move and work around the classroom as needed. Standing at a table or working on the floor, I even brought in an old couch and chair as options. What I have found in the 15 years I have been teaching is that giving students more choice in their learning environment allows them to take more ownership and responsibility for their learning goals. Offering options like wobble stools, balance balls, and other creative seating gives my students an even greater ability to decide what will work best for them when completing tasks.
I am always looking for ways to stay innovative and creative to meet the needs of my students.
Kindergartners need to wiggle and move. Developmentally it is inappropriate for these young students to "sit still" for extended periods of time, yet often this is what is expected in classrooms nowadays. Then, when kids struggle to meet this expectation, they are often reprimanded for it when they can't. Confidence and self esteem as well as attention, stamina, and efficiency on tasks suffer as a result. These materials will help students stay positive about school and engaged in their work. At the same time, it will build their core strength and gives their boundless kindergarten energy a place to go!
