I teach all subjects to a class of third grade students in rural South Carolina. Many members of our community have been faced with unemployment due to company closures. Although our district has faced multiple budget cuts, our students are eager about learning.

As I plan lessons that integrate the arts across the curriculum, I have found that an open space is necessary for students to work cooperatively while moving about the classroom. A wide, open space of tiled concrete is not very inviting.

To encourage my students to work together in a large group or in small cooperative groups, I feel that it is necessary to cover the tiled concrete with a large enough rug that would create an inviting area, while offering a comfortable place for my students to engage in learning.
