Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
What if the only way to learn was through using pictures or objects? Some children on the autism spectrum think, learn and organize information this way.
Most of my students are diagnosed with autism and are truly amazing children who have a range of abilities in their social, cognitive, and language skills.
I believe providing my students with a variety of materials and opportunities that support their various abilities and learning styles will enable them to generalize skills, engage socially and continue to blossom as learners.
My Project
Communication and social-emotional skills are areas where my students with autism struggle. Developing game-playing skills with an emphasis on turn taking, waiting appropriately and winning/losing gracefully is an important push for my students this year. Top Trumps Match Game is a simple game by nature that allows players to repetitively take turns with pauses in between where the other player has to wait patiently before going again. Not only is repetition important for my students in order to learn a skill, but generalization afterwards is also critical so they can use that new skill under a different context.
Having different versions of Top Trump Match will provide my students with the materials they need to help them start on their game-playing journey.
They will be able to work on waiting appropriately in between turns while attempting to match five identical cubes in a horizontal, vertical or diagonal row. The game can be modified so that the wait time in between turns can be adjusted based on student’s individual needs. The catch--where winning/losing gracefully comes into play--is that the other player can steal the win if one of the two cards they preselected at the beginning of the game matches who/what was in the winning five in a row. Regardless or winning or losing the students will engage in an appropriate gesture or statement at the end of the game to the peer that they played with.
These materials will benefit my students tremendously and will provide the perfect bridge between their communication and social skills. Despite the game play being simple, it is an entry point for my students so they can eventually immerse themselves into the vast world of board game play.
