WHS Creative Collective Seeks Quality Equipment for Media Production

My Project

WHS Creative Collective is comprised of over 30 high school media students at Wrenshall School District, a K-12 public school in rural, northern Minnesota. Over the past three years in this position, we have had to make do with the resources I inherited from the past teacher and the resources that our students have on hand. It has been amazing to see how the students have created short films, yearbooks, podcast episode, magazine articles, documentaries, commercials, and more with their limited materials and resources.

With only iPhones and cheap lapel microphones, our students have made a three-part short film series, a full-length WrensHallmark movie, a variety of hilarious commercials and promotions, podcast episodes, and more; WHS students are brimming with talent, interest, and creativity, even creating the brand/production company WHS Creative Collective for themselves, and if our students had access to the requested camera, lens, microphone kits, cables, and other high quality resources necessary to succeed in the field of Media Production, this program would soar.

All students deserve access to the materials and resources used by working professionals in the field, especially since digital media is such an important and ever-growing sector in the global economy.

Our lack of funds and resources has proven an issue. We often have to ask/pay working professionals in the area to help us, because our current media program does not have the appropriate resources. For example, last year, our productions became so great and renowned in the community that we were asked by the School Board to create a commercial for our District. We had the ideas, skills, and students, but we did not have the resources. We were lucky to receive help from a local professional, but if we had the right materials, we could have saved that money and had a product that was 100% student-made.
