Ms. Cassermere from Baltimore MD is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
See what Ms. Cassermere is requestingMy students need a collection of biographies that will provide background knowledge on various subjects and people in an informative and accessible way.

Give us big heads to fill our own! My students are discovering their world every day, but they don't always have the background knowledge that will bring it all together. How did a puppeteer revolutionize children's television? How are the stories of Helen Keller and Jackie Robinson similar?
My students are like a room full of reporters, always asking questions, gratified equally by my ability to answer a question as well as those moments when I'm stumped.
But the substance of my answers is what my 53 fifth graders seek more than anything else. They are as eager to be shared with as they are to share with others. Individually, they aspire to meet and beat challenges; collectively, they have displayed a strength and creativity that only barely touches their potential. As our school has progressed, so have our kids. They are evolving from students to active participants in learning, and they want nothing more than to make sense of the world around them.
The "Who Was..." series of biographies brings important past and present figures to life for school age children. Where a lesson in my classroom can reveal a door and open it a little bit, a biography can bust it wide open. These resources can and will be used as sources for research projects, provide perspective on individuals for debates, and allow my students to make sense of what we learn in class on their own time. I want students to grab these books off the shelves and get lost in their pages. I want them to approach every adult they know asking the question, "Did you know...?" These books will provide them with a foundation of knowledge that will do more than just prepare them for classroom discussions, they will offer them the opportunity to connect the events and people in history to events and people they hear and learn about today.
As adults, we understand how the lessons learned in the past, as well as the sacrifices and decisions made have changed and shaped the world as we know it.
As teachers, we strive to teach everything, but teaching everything includes teaching our kids how to learn on their own. These books will enable my students to teach themselves in a way that makes sense to them. From there, they will be empowered to continue learning and growing on their own, and that's the most important lesson of all.
