Learning to read can be intimidating and even discouraging, especially when you're 4 and maybe English isn't your first language, but with the use of old classics such as The Three Billy Goats Gruff & The Carrot Seed students are transformed into readers through practice and rehearsal of these stories that many of us have had the pleasure of growing up reading/listening to.
OH, I KNOW THIS STORY!
As kindergartner's our natural curiosity of the world allows us to dive into many different types of texts. We can look at pictures of places we've never been and imagine what it would be like living there, but the love for learning really begins once we feel as if we're doing the job ourselves.
Through the reading, retelling, analyzing and even acting out of old classics my class gains the confidence to read independently as well as to their peers or family!
My Project
As the students and I settle in to a year of fun and learning, we need books that will keep us engaged, entertained, and wanting to read more and more as the weeks go by!
Practice Makes Perfect!
By reading, and re-reading old classics, my students are able to practice basic skills such as: book handling (turning from one page to another), pointing to each word as we read, using pictures to help us decode words we are unsure of and most importantly (and of course, the most fun) reading with EXPRESSION!
Students gain the confidence to read by themselves and with others by practicing these old classics day in and day out. This sets the foundation for an engaging and exciting year of learning!
