Ms. Venora from Brooklyn NY is requesting musical instruments through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students a full classroom set of ukuleles to make creating, experiencing, and loving music more accessible!

In Brooklyn, I am the general music teacher to 350 students in Pre K to 5th grade. My "big kids" (3rd, 4th, and 5th) have a wide depth of outside musical knowledge and vernacular that they use to inform their in-school learning. They are eager to see how the pop music they enjoy daily interacts with, is similar to, and differs from new material they are introduced to in music class.
My students come from diverse socio-economic and racial backgrounds and are all adventurous explorers, critical thinkers, and creative musicians.
Each class brings a wide variety of interests and goals that they use to deepen their experiences of singing, playing, improvising, composing, listening, and responding.
Making music together and fostering a lifelong love of music is part of my mission as an elementary music educator. The ukuleles I am requesting for my students will be used and enjoyed daily and continually for years to come. I would love to provide these instruments as another means of making music in our classroom, and ukes are perfect because they make pop music accessible! So much of kids' musical learning takes place outside of school in what they listen to at home, and ukuleles are a wonderful tool to take enjoying pop music to the next level.
A big part of my job is to facilitate musical exploration and empower young musicians.
Instrumental exploration is such a core element of musical learning at any age, and I believe that my older students would benefit greatly from having ukuleles in our classroom.
