Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Remember when you were a kid and you couldn’t wait for the day in gym. In PE, every day was different. You could be a superhero, Tarzan, a baseball player, the possibilities of the imagination was endless. I remember this vividly, which I now see through the eyes of my students. My kids LOVE PE and have missed it so much.

I work at a small, Title I community school in the South Bronx.

Most of my students have been with me from kindergarten and we are very much a family. As we all know, the past few school years have been challenging (physically, mentally and emotionally) Even though we are faced with a lot of challenges (my students love challenges) we face them eagerly. Now, more than ever, we have to be creative and resilient as a school community. I’m happy to say we are all back together and giving it our all.

As teachers, we need to assess the needs of our students constantly. Being with them every day, I see that the needs have shifted. I believe that they need various types of activities to accommodate all students. For this reason I’m asking for a crash/thick gymnasitics mat.

My Project

As educators, we want to teach our students to be lifelong learners. Gymnastics is a lifelong skill. Gymnastics is the type of activity that makes all others possible. It builds confidence, strength, and balance. It teaches spatial awareness, body controls, and balance. These are skills essential to all physical activities from playing sports to walking home. This mat will be part of a greater unit that I am working on to expand basic gymnastics. This will be essential for safety to do so. We will use this for jumping, landing, and tumbling. This will hone their skills at a younger age and help them work on them as they grow. Building strength is essential to living a healthy lifestyle. My kids love gymnastics and many are really good at it (as shown in pics). They just need a safe environment to thrive in, I would like to help them with that.
