Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are so eager to learn! One particular area I want to especially focus on is nonfiction writing. I see many of my students struggle to have the time to get resources they need outside of school in order to complete a project. I want to provide them the resources in the classroom especially when it comes to writing. Ever since we did our last reading unit on inventions and inventors a lot of my students are curious about history and inventors or people who have made an impact in our world. Hands are going more than ever! I see my students’ need more experience on how to do research, take notes, avoid plagiarism, and most of all stay focused and engaged throughout the assignment. I have a few students who struggle to start writing because of the topic given. But strongly believe if given the choice on what they can research will motivate them to not only start writing but continue writing. I want to take advantage of their curiosity now and use it to drive a new nonfiction writing project by providing them a rich resource of biography books!
My Project
How can I incorporate mentor texts that are student friendly but also reliable sources of nonfiction text? By using a new series of nonfiction books called, Who Was....” Each biography book engages students with leveled text filled with nonfiction text features such as timelines, captions, and photographs! I want each student to have reliable resources that are academically engaging for developing biographies. My plan is to teach students how to write a biography with facts and details using the writing process. I need a readily accessible library of books that students can use within our classroom. I’d love to have a variety of biographies on at least 20 or more different people who have had an impact on society from the past to the present, be it George Washington or Bill Gates. Please help my class achieve a library of biographies to help them with their writing project!
