These are skills that can be difficult for elementary students to understand through traditional instruction alone. Instead of simply learning rules and procedures, students are using manipulatives to represent unknown quantities, develop algebraic reasoning, and explain why their solutions work. It has been exciting to watch students realize that they are capable of tackling mathematical concepts they once thought were \"too hard\" for them!\r\n\r\nMy students especially enjoy that Hands-On Equations feels more like solving a puzzle than completing a math worksheet. They work at their own pace, test their thinking, discuss strategies with classmates, and learn from mistakes along the way. I have seen students become more confident as they successfully solve increasingly challenging equations, and some of my most enthusiastic mathematicians are the students who love a good challenge and can't wait to see what problem comes next. My students were absolutely thrilled when they first saw the new materials. Their excitement was immediate! They couldn't wait to open the boxes, explore the pieces, and start building. My students love hands-on learning, and having the opportunity to build, experiment, and problem-solve with LEGO SPIKE has given them an exciting new way to engage in STEAM learning.\r\n\r\nWe are using the sets to challenge students to think creatively and critically as they design, build, test, and improve their creations. One of the most exciting parts has been watching students work together to develop ideas, encounter problems, and then persevere as they figure out how to make their designs work. These experiences give my gifted students the opportunity to apply their knowledge in authentic ways while developing important skills in communication, collaboration, creativity, and problem-solving.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to continue exploring the capabilities of LEGO SPIKE through increasingly challenging design and engineering challenges. They are already looking forward to returning after summer break to see how the space has transformed over the months away. I was also able to host an afterschool garden club for students who wanted to spend even more time learning about gardens. They were able to help build the raised garden beds, plant seedlings and learn about topics ranging from compost to water conservation. My students now have the freedom to choose where and how they work best—whether it's on a wobble stool, cushion, ball chair, or cozy floor spot. This autonomy is not only exciting for them but also empowering. Each day, they are learning to listen to their own needs and take ownership of their learning in ways that build confidence and independence.\r\n\r\nFlexible seating has also allowed me to better differentiate instruction to meet the diverse needs of our learners. Whether a student needs movement to stay focused, a quieter corner to reduce distractions, or a space that supports sensory regulation, the variety of seating options makes it possible. It has been incredible to see how this flexibility supports different learning styles and fosters a more engaging and supportive classroom environment.\r\n\r\nThe students' excitement was palpable each time a new type of seating arrived (we are now up to 20 flexible seats in 5 different styles). They would race to get to my class because they wanted first pick of seating. This led to me having a meaningful conversation with my student groups (K-3rd) where we discussed ways to make the seating fair and equitable for every student. In the end, we created a schedule to rotate the order which students get to choose their seating for the day. A student who had his first pick declared himself, \"King of the day!\" He proceeded to puff out his chest and refer to his wobble chair as a \"throne\" for the rest of the day. \r\n\r\nThe smiles, increased focus, and newfound enthusiasm for learning I see each day is a direct result of your kindness. They were so excited for our construction area, as I put it together over a few days. Two students sit at it in a time for read to self and it makes for a comfortable reading spot in the classroom.\r\n\r\nThey were equally excited about the large area rug to add color and comfort to our library area! \r\n\r\nThe classroom has already began using the blank dry erase boards during our math block.
