Would you want to go to a library that had pieces of gum stuck everywhere? Me neither.

I am expecting a group of 20-25 fifth graders this year, and I can only hope that they are as happy and intelligent as the similar group I was lucky to teach last year.

I have been at the same public middle school in New York for the past four years. Our students are largely second-generation immigrants, and nearly half of them are designated as English language learners. As a result, reading is their biggest challenge. Most of them know this and work as hard as they can to improve. Creating a fun, engaging environment to foster reading growth is one of my more important duties.

My Project

Sadly, when I returned from summer vacation to get to work on the year to come, I discovered that my new room was home to one of the least attractive rugs imaginable! I make a big deal out of letting the most focused scholars spend their independent reading time on the rug, but I cannot imagine anyone wanting to sit on the dirty piece of fabric I encountered. Besides hosting a few unidentifiable dark stains, it had at least five pieces of gum stuck to it in various places. As hard as I tried, I could not get it all off. To fix the problem, I'm requesting a new, CLEAN rug that my students can use to relax and focus on their reading.

Research shows that the achievement gap in the United States is overwhelmingly due to literacy.

To narrow the gap, my students will learn to love reading this year. A new rug would show how much reading is valued in my class, and it would prevent students from getting distracted or feeling uncomfortable while they are engaged in their books. Creating avid readers this year will enable my students to achieve their dreams, whatever they may be.
