This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach first grade at an inner city school. My school receives 100% free breakfast and lunch. My students are excited to come to school and learn every day. They thrive on the support and love they get at school, and it really makes a difference in their lives.
My student's parents want to be involved in their children's education but aren't sure how.
Many of them didn't have fun or good experiences in school. They want to help their children, but things have changed a lot.
My Project
I try to talk to as many parents as I can every day. I've built great relationships with many of them. One thing I noticed about all of them is that they want their children to succeed in school and want to help them. Education has changed so much over the years and can be very intimidating!
Giving families learning games for homework will allow children to learn, parents to help them, and provide some quality family time.
I want to organize homework game bags. Each bag has one game in it (dominoes, Pixy Cubes, Geometry building sets and more) that students take home for a week. I'll include some directions and suggestions in each bag to ensure success. I'll label each bag with vinyl to keep them organized. Parents and their children will play together for the week and then return for a new bag! I am so excited for this project to help involve parents in their child's leaning in a hands on and fun way. They might even forget they are teaching!
