Mrs. MacAllister-Rowe from Eastpointe MI is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a class set (15) of the book The Hate U Give that will hook them into the wonderful world of reading and imagination that is realistic.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are my children and I only want the best for them. When you walk in the classroom you see a rambunctious bunch of teenagers who are eagerly awaiting to learn, but become easily frustrated. You see, my students are in a self-contained classroom for 80% of the day and are mildly cognitively impaired. There is a misperception that they cannot learn and if they can, it is at an elementary level. That is not true!!!
My students are an eager group who love learning and doing higher level work that consists of high school academics.
My students love to be challenged with higher level thinking skills. They love to learn and be apart of something more than what society tells them they can do.
My students are used to reading A-Z books that are leveled. My students are tired and bored of these type of printed books and want more. The books we are asking for is one they will be reading for next year called, "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. This book will be intriguing and will incorporate a lot of prior knowledge, which my students need to understand the material better. This material will be engaging, life-changing, and understandable to read based on the interest level of this subject.
My students go through similar situations on a daily basis and need to understand the importance of their actions and their ability to change things for the better.
While we read this my students will dive into the text and complete a daily "text talk" reading journal. They will understand the importance of figurative language, imagery, character development, understanding unknown words, making connections and inferences, locating the setting and the theme. The unit will also incorporate history and compare today's society. These activities will help them gain reading skills that they do not currently possess and will encourage them to gain more knowledge while reading something that interests them.
