My students are used to reading A-Z books that are leveled. My students are tired and bored of these type of printed books and want more. The books we are asking for is one they will be reading for next year called, "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. This book will be intriguing and will incorporate a lot of prior knowledge, which my students need to understand the material better. This material will be engaging, life-changing, and understandable to read based on the interest level of this subject. My students go through similar situations on a daily basis and need to understand the importance of their actions and their ability to change things for the better. While we read this my students will dive into the text and complete a daily "text talk" reading journal. They will understand the importance of figurative language, imagery, character development, understanding unknown words, making connections and inferences, locating the setting and the theme. The unit will also incorporate history and compare today's society. These activities will help them gain reading skills that they do not currently possess and will encourage them to gain more knowledge while reading something that interests them.
