My Students

Welcome to Ms K's sculpture class! In our class we learn to carve, create, and sculpt many different materials and textures. Students are never bored and are always excited to create their original art pieces. When the clean up bell rings, I have to go around and force students to stop working. Since we live in Los Angeles area, there are diverse students in my classroom and we all learn so much from one another. Around half of the class consists of seniors and by the time they are able to take sculpture, they are very eager to start learning and experiencing 3D art. It is also great to have many 12th graders in the class because other grades get to interact with the older students and a wonderful environment is created!

My Project

The animal bank project has been only assigned to my students four years ago because we had money from a grant and were able to do this project. It was a very successful project and students were so happy with the outcome.

With this grant, students this year will be able to experience creating this successful project that my students experienced four years ago.

Students first make sketches of various animals that they would like to create. Then they make the animal’s structure with 14 gauge wire, making sure that the animal is hallow. Then students apply masking tape to their wired sculptures. After covering the whole animal with masking tape, students apply paper maché on top of the masking tape and smooth out the paper maché with their fingers. After they have painted their animal banks, students get to talk about their artwork, their experience, and procedure in a class critique.

Students really enjoyed this because they’re working with different materials and I want them to learn that sculpture is not only sculpting but also building layers.
