For many of our students, who come from low-income households, these hands-on opportunities are essential, and your donation ensures they have access to quality materials they otherwise wouldn't.\r\n\r\nThis project is about much more than just art supplies; it's about craftsmanship and collaboration. Our students (Grades 9-12) will be diving into complex construction techniques, learning how to manipulate wire and build sturdy forms before layering them with maché. Teens are not excited to read (and as much hand-wringing that we do as a society, they never really have been). Because of your generosity, my English Language Development students now have access to books that make them want to read. When the boxes arrived, I catalogued each book and recorded what they were about and their reading levels and set it all up in my library. The students gravitate towards these books and pick them up, even if it's just to be able to sit together in the library section and look like they are reading. One of my students had to do independent study and he took one of the books with him and *actually read it,* which I was very excited for. \r\n\r\nThese high-interest, low-level books are perfect for the independent reading projects the students have coming up soon. They saw all the fun snacks and toys and In fact, I need to make a new project to fund it again and get more materials. The kids look forward to it every week and it gives me something to incentivize good behavior. The best part of it is creating a culture of known good behavior that can last in my classroom. I have almost all ninth graders and there are still a lot of variations maturity level in the room, so extrinsic motivation appeals to the most students.\r\n\r\nI use the tickets the most in the beginning of the class, when the students are supposed to have their binders and computers ready on their desk regardless of the lesson plan. When I walk around to give the tickets, it triggers the students who are lagging to rush and grab their materials. Post-covid has been very difficult on teachers. The two years of learning loss created such terrible social habits and this has been my way to retrain students how to student appropriately.\r\n\r\nWhat comes with good behavior is actual learning, which over time turns into actual motivation. When students know the answer, they want to participate more. When the classroom is quieter, they learn. It's not a perfect solution - not all students take to the tickets, but the majority do and I am seeing a longer honey-moon period as a result. (The honeymoon period can be anywhere from 2-6 weeks in school. Then the real students come out.) They use mini whiteboards to solve problems individually and in groups/partners and show their understanding as well as their struggles. The craft sticks have also been great for student engagement. The craft sticks allow for me to choose students randomly, to give other students an opportunity to share their learning instead of calling on the same students who raise their hands. Your contribution has had an incredible impact on my students, and I want to share just a few ways in which it has positively affected their learning and engagement.\r\n\r\nOne of the most exciting outcomes of receiving this new set of books was the increased enthusiasm my students displayed toward reading. The books were high-interest and sparked genuine excitement in my students. Many of them mentioned how thrilled they were to read the story, and it was evident in their eagerness to dive into the book each day. It was inspiring to see their faces light up as they talked about the characters, plot, and what might happen next. \r\n\r\nBeyond the excitement, the books also helped my students develop crucial reading skills, particularly in the area of inferencing. The chapters were rich in underlying meaning, requiring students to read between the lines and draw conclusions from subtle clues. This encouraged them to actively engage with the text, ask critical questions, and use context to understand the deeper layers of the material. The practice of inferencing has been invaluable in developing their comprehension skills and ability to analyze texts more thoughtfully.\r\n\r\nYour donation has made a tangible difference in the classroom, and it has provided my students with a resource that has fostered both a love for reading and improved their analytical thinking.
