Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of the students in my classroom come from lower income families and do not have access to more current books that they can relate to. Through this novel I want to introduce heroes to them and the character traits to help them better understand this theme of literature.
The students in my class are from lower income families, and 15% of my students are students with special needs.
Our students are fun, caring, and energetic to learn, but are lacking some of the more current resources. Our students participate in free programs that teachers sponsor, such as Chicago Run, BAM, Soccer initiative, basketball and volleyball. They are eager to gain as much knowledge as they can from the free programs that are offered to them. Our school is a Title 1 school. All the students receive free lunch and breakfast. We have great parent involvement from our students' parents, but we are not able to get the financial support from the parents for the PTO like some other schools.
My Project
Our students will use the materials to learn about the English Language Arts theme of heroes following the Engage New York unit. During the unit the students will be learning about the journey the hero has taken and how it has shaped the character. We want to use the book "The Lightning Thief" so students can see how this theme in literature relates to modern literature. The students will also be using the Lucy Calkins curriculum in conjunction. The overall goal is for students to be able to write a paper using textual evidence from the book and the model of Lucy Calkins. This will help prepare the students for high school and the demands that are expected of them in college.
Donations to this project will benefit the students greatly because they are eager to learn, but also need current literature to keep them interested.
Engaging students can be difficult when they can not relate to the curriculum. Our hopes are to have them become lifelong readers and writers once they are exposed to what the current literature is like.
