This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach middle school emotional support to in a low socioeconomic area. My students range from fourth through seventh grade and are all diagnosed with an emotional need.
There are days when students come to school with both academic and personal struggles that have caused them to be placed into my classroom.There are times when my students come to school with so many other things on there mind besides learning and it is hard to get them motivated.
Making learning as fun as possible helps to keep them engaged and interested in the topics that we are learning about!

My Project
My students can be hard to get motivated, but love to learn. Most often when we read it is fiction. I would like to get my students reading more non-fiction. I am requesting non-fiction books from the "Who Is?", "Who Was?" collection. These books tell about historic figures. It is a series of illustrated biographies for young readers featuring significant historical figures, including artists, scientists, presidents, inventors, etc.
Books like these will not only excite my struggling learners, but there are many resources out there to supplement these biographies.
Some of the books will have familiar names and others will help students grow interested in important people that are unknown to them.
The books in these series are age appropriate and fun to read. There are tons of wonderful pictures to help attract young learners to non-fiction text.
My goal is to provide quality biography books to help foster a love of reading in all my students. I also want my students to be able to complete research on these specific biographies to increase their writing skills.
