This school year looks different for students than any other school year before and students need extra encouragement during this time. My students already have difficulties with their social and emotional learning and this year has made these areas even more of a concern.
By showing students how to to fully understand emotions, and share them appropriately they will be able to fully engage in their learning and increase their academic successes.
The items that I have chosen to help my students include books, mindfulness cards, yoga dice and cards, stress balls and mindfulness cards and workbooks. These items will be used to help students during the social skills lesson that we have each day and during mindfulness.
During the social and emotional lessons and mindfulness times we will read the books about mindfulness and have discussion on how they can relate to the days. We will use the meditation and coping skills to practice way to calm during times of stress and unease. We will use our yoga cards and dice to practice yoga during mindfulness. I have been doing yoga with my students, and they are so interested in the different poses. These dice and cards will allow students to gain some control over what they would like to learn.
These items will help students be able to work towards understanding how to act when they are upset, frustrated, angry and sad. Once students work to identify these emotions in themselves they can practice mindfulness, stress reduction and coping skills to help them engage better in their learning.
