Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 3rd, 4th and 5th graders with various special needs who love to learn! They are very excited to read about how other people live their lives and are inspired by real-life success stories. Having books about real people who have done incredible things will teach them and give them hope!

Our children are imaginative and creative, and love learning about the world beyond their neighborhood.

For almost half of the students, English is their second language.

Our school, a moderately-sized elementary school in Queens, NY, is comprised of children from all parts of the globe and we have a large special needs community. They struggle to read on grade level, but they don't give up since reading opens up so many doors for them.

My Project

My students need 50 biographies that are written on their reading levels, so they can learn about the world through the actions of individuals. I would love to fill the shelves in my room with biographies to give the children a choice when learning about successful people. The "Who Am I?" series of biographies are written for children, but are not childish. They will give my students a sense of their own success, as they are able to read independently about the successes of others. Ultimately, I want the children to present The Biography Project. After reading a biography of their choosing, each child will write a report about the person AS IF THEY WERE THAT PERSON. The project would culminate in a presentation to the parents, where each child dresses like the subject of their report and speaks in first person about that person's life. Being able to FEEL like a successful person is another step towards finding their own paths to success.

My students will benefit by reading about all of the many pathways that other people have taken to reach their goals.

So many of the men and women in the Who Am I books started out with nothing and followed their dreams to make something of their lives. I want my students to feel the possibility of that kind of success as they read the stories of these famous people.
