My students need dress up clothing to improve their social skills through imaginative play. Most of my students with disabilities have social skills deficits and items that encourage pretend play help facilitate interactive play.

My Students
The students at my school stude are three to five years old preschool students with special needs. They have a variety of disabilities and attend an early childhood academy that was opened several years ago. My classroom consists of 16 children with a variety of special needs. Many of the children with special needs have deficits in social skills and need fun ways to encourage participation with their peers. Dress up clothing is a fun way to encourage imaginative play and cooperation!
My Project
My students with various special needs often have limited imaginative play skills along with other social skills deficits. All of my students have social/emotional goals in their iep’s to address such things as playing with a peer, taking turns, initiating an interaction, etc. Adding dress up community helper clothing to my dramatic play center will encourage not only imaginative play but also other forms of play such as cooperative play, etc. These forms of play can address these iep goals. These items can be used throughout the school year but will be especially useful during our unit on community helpers.
