I teach Special Education Preschool at the Justin Early Learners Academy in Simi Valley, CA. The children in my class have a variety of abilities. I moved last year to this campus along with five other special education classes and two adult education preschool classes. There is also a daycare center on the campus and a First Five program as well. Most children with special needs have deficits in social skills. The children integrate with the typically developing children on the playground who act as peer role models. We encourage a variety of play such as imaginary, dramatic and physical play. Since the school was recently converted from an elementary school to an early childhood center it is limited in its outdoor play equiptment. There is a swing set, climbing equiptment and a small bicycle path. This project will not only benefit my classroom but also the other classrooms that share our outdoor playground.
