Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach an Algebra Extensions course to incoming freshman. Many of these students have had little success in math and have struggled with basic concepts in the past. My program is design to help these students feel valued and to promote their feeling of success in mathematical concepts and reasoning skills. This program uses explorations and puzzles to build logical thinking to help students make sense of what they are learning.
Although my students would never admit it, they want to learn math.
My Project
Using whiteboard in math class is a daily activity. The use of white boards during instruction allows the students to become more actively engaged. This higher engagement leads to mathematic discussions where we discuss logic and how problems can be solved different ways to come up with the same answer. Students use whiteboard to work together with a partner or in small groups. In addition, students learn that making mistakes are just part of the learning process. Whiteboards make it easy to correct these mistakes without have to start the whole process over again.My math class is based on algebraic thinking through discovery. Chart paper and markers will be used for students to present their learning to other students. This gives students a profound confidence in what they have learned. Other supplies are basic necessities that I do not have in my classroom. Your donation will increase the focus and engagement of my students.
