White Boards Are Useless Without Markers!!

My students need dry erase markers to go with the mini-white boards we already have, and an assortment of fun incentives, such as erasers and pencils.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom rewards risk-taking students who interact with the language, perform for their peers and applaud each others efforts! We act, we laugh, we collaborate, and we use lots of Spanish every day.

My students are a diverse bunch of high school students.

Most of them are interested in careers in the medical/health fields, so being able to speak Spanish is extremely important to them. Our school has a strong foreign language program, and many students continue beyond the one mandatory year of language to take the optional state exam in Spanish and AP-level classes. My 2nd and 3rd year classes are essential to this flow. Our school is large, but retains a small school feel. Students are well-known by their teachers, and receive extensive academic and emotional support so they can graduate college and career ready. Seventy percent of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and approximately thirteen percent receive special education services. Our 4-year graduation rate exceeds the citywide average (the 2014 graduation rate was almost 30 percentage points over the citywide average!) and we have a terrific 4-year college acceptance rate.

My Project

Games and interactive activities are an essential part of my foreign language classroom. My students love to use mini-white boards to demonstrate their comprehension of vocabulary, play competitive games and otherwise show off what they've learned. However, the stash of dry erase markers we have is on its last legs. Activities keep getting interrupted when markers dry out and I have to search for a marker that works so a student can continue to participate. We desperately need a new set of markers!! In addition, we need some new incentives so I can reward superstar students! With cute pencils, erasers, and stamps in my "prize bag," I can give them a tangible reward for their hard work.

My students always cheer when I say it's time to pass out the mini-white boards.

They enthusiastically refer to it as "marker day!" With new dry erase markers, I can continue to include activities they enjoy in my lessons. With a fresh supply of incentives, I can reward them with prizes that are more durable and useful than the candy prizes I have been buying at a local store.
