My classroom is in a selective enrollment math and science academy on the south side of Chicago. My students are historically underrepresented but are highly motivated, and love to explore topics in great detail.
My students love to engage with the world around them, and push themselves to do amazing things in their science classroom.
I want my students to be able to explore science and foster their curiosity for the world around them. This is difficult at times with the supplies we have.
My Project
In our classroom, we are lucky to have large whiteboards for each table and small white boards for each student. Students use these whiteboards to collaboratively brainstorm the mechanisms behind scientific phenomena and practice math problems.
We encourage students to critique themselves, critique their classmates, and then collectively revise their work.
Once one group has the correct answer, they can stand up and justify their work to the rest of the class. Students are constantly writing, erasing, and rewriting. The process uses a lot of white board markers, but if we were using pencil and paper the high level of collaboration would not be possible.
With this project, we will no longer need to stress about what we will do when we run out of markers. We will also be able to keep consistent in class practices throughout the school year, allowing students to focus on content and not learning a new class practice.
