Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have taught special education to fourth, fifth and sixth graders in East Harlem for the last six years. Because each student is unique and some of them struggle with disabilities that are quite severe, I use a variety of teaching tools to meet their various individual needs. I particularly love teaching my students to learn to read because I see how reading can open up new worlds for them. However, they often need to read aloud to themselves to enhance their reading comprehension. Unfortunately, this makes it difficult to have a quiet classroom where everyone can focus on their work. I have found a wonderful low-tech and low-cost tool that will enable my students to read aloud to themselves without disturbing each other. It is called the Whisperphone, and I am asking for funding to purchase a classroom set of 12 Whisperphones. The Whisperphone is a simple yet amazing device, an acoustical headset, that assists students in reading outloud to themselves by channeling their voices directly into their ears so they can hear what they are reading, even in a noisy environment. This means that everyone can read outloud, using quieter voices, and still hear themselves. Most importantly, it allows my students to focus on their work and not on their neighbor. Using the Whisperphone can help a child's reading, speech, language and vocabulary development. It has also helped students get better at math. The Whisperphones are lightweight and virtually indestructible, making them perfect for the classroom. I am so hopeful that I will be able to introduce my students to this exceptional learning tool. I know that having these Whisperphones will really help my young readers improve. Thank you.
