Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students are full of energy and ready to learn. Each morning, we begin the day with silent reading. Having more books that spark their interests could push them to the next level. By the end of the year, I'd like to proudly announce that every child has progressed and now reads on grade level.

My students are seven and eight year old, general education students.

They enjoy being read to, hands-on math activities, drama activities related to our reading lessons, and physical education. The students are curious and inquisitive individuals. Many of our students live in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area. Our school provides a warm and nurturing environment for students in grades Pre K-Grade 5. The students love sharing information about books they've read and they often have lively conversations about the characters or facts that they've learned. Leadership is a main focus in our school, so we encourage students to be responsible and studious. We have a program whereby students throughout the school are selected to receive training concerning conflict resolution. Once they are trained, they become Peace Leaders: they help classmates diffuse negative situations that sometimes arise in the classroom. Overall, I teach a small group of dynamic children who make each day a pleasure!

My Project

The materials I am requesting will allow my students to work in small guided reading groups. This will enable each child in the group to have the same nonfiction book to learn from and enjoy. When each child is given such attention, it encourages him/her to take risks when reading and set higher goals for reading. The leveled libraries I am requesting would enable children to have a wider selection of books to not only read in school, but to also take home and to read to/with family members. The phonics materials will encourage all students, especially those who are learning English as a second language, to learn the basic and fundamental components of our language. The phonics cubes can be used as a hands-on activity for identifying word families and also as a great spelling activity. The sight word books encourage success for beginning readers. The students will experience the joy of receiving brand-new books that they'll cherish and look forward to reading throughout the school year.

Receiving donations will enable children to feel more confident when reading and learning new words.

There is nothing like the gift of a shiny, colorful, interesting book to inspire a child to reach so much higher, in their endeavor to become a proficient reader. Students love working in guided reading groups in the classroom. They crave that close attention from the teacher and are excited for the next time when their group will have a reading session. Phonics materials make learning fun.
