Which Colors Are Those Lights?

My students need 24 spectroscopes, 3 spectrum tube power supply carousels, and 6 different types of spectrum tubes.

My Students

I am very fortunate to teach the students of this community. They are motivated, inquisitive and really enjoy collaborating when given a project. Over the past year, parents have generously donated towards my vision of introducing STEM based chemistry and biology labs involving amazing technology that is used to gather data.

The students appreciate the opportunity to use the STEM lab equipment because it allows them to use technology while collaborating and using critical thinking to produce results which help prepare them for the future.

My Project

Recently, I purchased one spectrum tube unit which included a power supply, a few gas tubes, and a handful of spectroscopes. When introducing the unit to the class, I explained that when they look through the spectroscope at LED lights, then the incoming light is broken up into the different bands of wavelength that actually make up the LED light. They suddenly seemed super excited to use the unit but unfortunately, I do not have enough for the entire class. Then I had an idea...if I had a class set that the students can use as an after school project!

After school, the students would use the spectroscopes to observe all the colors of visible light that make up each noble gas fluorescent tube, then take a spectroscope home for a day to explore different LED lights around town!

I was not expecting the excitement they expressed when I introduced the spectroscopy unit. It bummed me out knowing that I did not have enough but I purchased them as a demonstration. If we are able to get this project funded, then they would have the resources needed to study the behavior of light outside of class time.
