I teach 10th grade Geometry at a rural High School located in the foothills of the Smokey Mountains

Although my students are very diverse academically and socially, the one constant variable they all share is a perception that somehow Mathematics is not relevant in their everyday lives. All teachers get the question "Where would we ever use this?" I want to be able to show them the answers to that question. Their eyes have not yet been opened to the many opportunities that are within their reach. Consequently, my school is still struggling with dropout and graduation rates.

The solution is to reveal to them the world of Mathematics that has been buried in countless problems, and useless short-term memorization. I want to be able to take them outside on campus with a compass and map of the Smokey Mountains and help them find themselves in this world. With an array of mountain peaks as a backdrop, I would like to teach them that with simple Geometry and Geography concepts, we can Triangulate our exact position on the map much like our current GPS systems do now.

This is a great way for students to get "real life, hands-on" experience with the power and usefulness of mathematics. I believe that if we re-orient our approach to teaching, our students would take this knowledge with them for a lifetime.
