My students need 16 math manipulatives such as pattern blocks, mirrors, 30 compasses, and tangrams to better understand and learn math logic and problem-solving strategies.
Logic - you've gotta love it! I will be teaching 6th grade at an elementary school with various socio-economic and cultural groups (ESL). Last year there were only three 6th grade classrooms, but this year, to lower class size and give students more opportunities to learn, another 6th grade class will be added! And I am excited to be teaching it - but there are very few math resources available.
You saw the EMPTY SHELVES in our picture??? We have almost no manipulatives for working through the logic of problem-solving, in cooperative, whole group, small group, or individual settings. 6th grade year is the "last chance" year to ENSURE that students understand the logic (how and why) of basic math concepts. With the various student levels of math competencies, a variety of math strategies is called for. Use of hands-on strategies (math manipulatives, tools, and resources) will help students deepen understanding and make problem-solving easier for all students, no matter what their background knowledge. Unfortunately, many of our students don't like math. I love math, and plan to help my students love it, too!
The resources I have ordered will help students logically problem-solve for all 5 math standards (core curriculum), which includes number sense, measurement, geometry, data and probability, and algebra. Use of these manipulatives will reinforce abstract math concepts with concrete investigations. Math manipulatives and tools appear to be universally supportive of ALL students, no matter what their original ability level. The use of these resources will help provide a solid foundation for required upcoming algebra and geometry classwork.
You can make a difference in the kinds of math experiences my students will have this year by helping us to obtain necessary resources for our classroom. Through use of these resources, students will learn to think logically, use hands-on problem-solving strategies, promote critical thinking, and cooperative teamwork. ALL students, no matter what level, will be trained in the use of these resources, and how to take care of them. They will be used for many years to come, not only in math, but in related subjects as well (science, art, social studies).
