Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school strives to promote a positive learning environment, that provides all students with the necessary tools to learn and grow. The school I teach at, is located in a low-socioeconomic community with a high student population of English Language Learners.
My kindergarten class consists of 18 energetic and inquisitive students.
Of the 18, six are English Language Learners, three receive resource room services, and four are in speech. All of the children are excited to be in school for the first time and are enthusiastic about learning.
My Project
A new classroom rug that is designed with individual rug spots for each student will make a significant difference in the learning environment in our kindergarten classroom.
The majority of the learning in kindergarten takes place on the rug.
With this new classroom rug, every student will have his/her own spot on the rug that is easy for them to remember. It will help students know exactly where they need to sit on the rug everyday. In addition the spots on the rug will give the students a sense of personal space knowing that this square or letter is "my spot" and I need to stay seated nicely in "my spot" every time I sit on the rug.
Lastly, the ultimate reason my students will benefit from having this type of classroom rug is that it will make student discourse easier. The kindergartners can simply turn around and face their partners when it is partner talk time.
Adding this rug will eliminate wasted learning time spent on students moving around on the rug trying to find their rug spots because there will be no confusion over whose spot is whose.
