Our school has just become the first middle years program school in our county. Along with many other changes the students will encounter, one will be they will now have seven classes daily including a foreign language. My students are excited for the changes that are being implemented. They have a desire to collaborate and learn from one another.
My students learn best in an environment where they feel like they have a voice.
My students thrive on activities that are engaging. As young adults, they don't always love sitting at an old-school desk. I teach a plethora of students from gifted and high achieving to students with learning disabilities and students whose first language is not English.
I was given a bean bag chair at the beginning of the year, and it became wildly popular in my classroom. My students were constantly trying to get to class first or behave the best just so that they could have first dibs on the bean bag chair. I watched my students love reading just a little bit more, thanks to this chair.
My Project
I've been doing my own type of flexible seating for years now. I've always allowed my students to sit where they feel comfortable, whether that was in a chair, on a desk, or even on the floor. Being in a "non-science" classroom, my only option for seating is the desk/chair combination because the science teachers get the long tables for labs.
With fun chairs and big pillows, students will have the flexibility to sit more comfortably while they work if they choose.
My students will be able to work in quieter areas of the room, read a book on the floor, or collaborate with peers comfortably and not just in the tiny desks I provide.
