Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a K-5 elementary school. We are part of an urban district which has experienced a decrease in state funding over the past few years. The majority of our students are from low income families who are eligible for free breakfast and lunch based on their socioeconomic status. The school is comprised of students who come from single parent households, speak English as a second language, and have special needs.
Our students are imaginative, motivated, and very hard working.
Our students learn best when they are able to get out of their desk and work hands on with activities provided to them. They enjoy reading and love learning about different places, cultures, and histories, as well as sharing their own cultures with their peers.
My Project
"Just one more chapter!" Exactly what every teacher wants to hear from their students when they ask them to clean up their reading materials to move on to the next activity for the day! There is nothing more important to me as a teacher than sharing my love of reading with my students. Reading allows students to enter a whole new world and let their imagination run free. Reading allows students to learn about places they may never get to see. Reading is an important skill that everyone needs to possess in order to be successful.
This year we are fortunate enough to be moving into a brand new elementary school.
Moving to a new school is very exciting while also very difficult because we are trying to create a comfortable, warm, inviting environment for our students. An important piece to our classroom is of course a library space for students to read. Our goal is to create a Reading Garden Library for students in our classroom.
Imagine a colorful area within the room with all books and colorful bean bag seats all set around for students to sit on, share ideas, participate in discussions, and enjoy reading!
Our goal in our classroom is to encourage students to read! We are requesting flower bean bag chairs that will provide a meeting place for students to not only read, but also a place to practice communicating with peers about what they are reading and learning about. Students truly enjoy getting out of their seats and moving to a new place within the classroom. We often find students work harder on assignments when they can move out of their desks. With your help I can transform our reading space into a place students are begging to go to!
