Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Welcome to my fourth grade class! I teach in a Title 1 elementary school in Charlotte, North Carolina which means we have the highest percentages of children from low-income families in our school. It is difficult for the families to afford supplies.
I am in awe of their ability to leave their difficult home lives at the door and enter the classroom with motivation, creativity, and a love of learning.
Every year, I am blessed to teach siblings and cousins. This connection to family helps build a relationship of unity in the classroom. My classroom is safe and welcoming and offers every supply that they will ever require to be successful.
I teach Math, Science, and Social Studies to fifty scholars. We switch classes halfway through the day. We focus on small group instruction in order to meet the needs of each scholar and help them reach their potential. My scholars laugh at me, because I tell them that I sleep with their data. For 180 days, I analyze what they need from me and how I can help them. I do this because I admire them. I respect them. I do this because I love them.
My Project
Some of the simplest supplies can make the difference between a smooth day and a bumpy day. An extra tape dispenser or stapler can cut organization for scholars in half. Every minute saved is another minute added to the teaching side of the day.
The stapler is broken again.
I am always amazed at how quickly a ten year old can break a stapler. I model how to use the stapler, but they really love to slam it down when no one is watching. Ahhhhhh! I am sure that we all remember the temptation to turn all paper into a paper airplane when the teacher is sick and there is a substitute. Yes, this is still happening in my room. We use Post-Its for so many things and I never have enough. Four per student make an awesome math definition flip book.
