My Students

My students love to learn about the Middle East, a distant land unknown to them. Creating notebook sized countries does not allow for the impact of learning we wish to achieve.

My students are seventh graders in a moderately poor city.

They are typical 12-13 year-old children, yet many do not have the advantages afforded those in neighboring cities. The school they attend is a building split between a 5-6 intermediate school and a 7-8 middle school.

My Project

We need poster board which will be used to have the students make maps of the Middle Eastern Countries. With the maps they create they will also research information about that area of world. They then take this new information and share it with the other students by way of an informative speech. The students always enjoy the project and learn so much about mapping, the Middle East, and giving speeches. Having the poster board needed to fulfill this project will also allow me to use the social studies budget for other much needed supplies.

Knowing that the Middle East is such an important part of our world today I feel this project is a must for students.

I know they can look at a map of the Middle East but it just doesn't have the same impact as a hands-on project. As much as my students enjoy the project, I would be devastated to have to give up the project due to lack of paper.
