Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine you are a 5th grade student trying to learn about the continents of Europe and Asia and practice your map skills. Then imagine you are using an atlas printed in 1995! How many countries would you find that no longer exist? How would the population numbers have changed?

My students are 5th grade English Language Learners in an inner city school in Texas.

We are a Title 1 school with 98% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. The majority of the students come from homes in which English is not spoken and parents are struggling to provide the basics. They very rarely leave our inner city neighborhood, unless they are visiting family in Mexico. To them, the world consists of our city, those they pass on the drive south, and Mexico. Their understanding of other continents and countries is very limited.

My Project

Of course, all of the information students need can be found on the Internet, but most of my students do not have those resources available outside school. In addition, learning to use an atlas, read different kinds of maps such as political, physical, climate, and population density maps, and interpret charts is an important research skill. The atlases I have available for my students are over ten years old. Besides being very worn from years of use, they are outdated, showing countries that no longer exist, incorrect borders, and very old population density maps. A class set of new atlases will allow my students to explore and practice this important skill, as well as providing an atlas for each student to use, instead of having them share in groups of three because the ones we have are worn out.

In order for my students to imagine a future outside their neighborhood, they must be able to imagine the possibilities.

Providing the tools they need to explore continents and countries, and to compare different types of maps will help them to be successful beyond my classroom.
