Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is located on the Southeast side of Chicago. 92% of the students at my school are low-income, 30% are English Language learners, 15% of the students have IEPs, and 1% are homeless. My 7th grade students require exceptional educational support for learning disabilities, emotional and behavioral disabilities, ADHD, and other health impairments. They are respectful of one another and lend a helping hand when needed.

My students are inquisitive and want to explore the world around them.

They have big plans for their futures. My students are already thinking about what they want to be when they get older, where they want to live, and places they want to visit.

My Project

We work on our geography skills on a daily basis in my Social Studies class. My students are learning how to read a map and using directions to get from one place to another. We are using these skills to navigate throughout our own neighborhood as well as the United States and the world. While we have flat maps in our classroom, we are without a globe which is important for the students to understand the spatial relationship between the continents.

My students need to have a sense of where they are in the world and how to navigate from point A to point B.

These materials will be an excellent addition to our geography lessons. The students can not only learn more about their neighborhood, city, and state, but also the rest of the United States and the world.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
