Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students have no idea where they live!!! I ask them what the name of our town is called and they reply, "California"! I ask what our country is called and they say, "North America"! My students need some help locating themselves in the world and gaining world perspective. Please help them!
I am a very lucky teacher!
I work in an awesome school with incredibly hard working teachers, and amazing students! My students are all from a low-economic background, and all receive free lunch and breakfast at school each day. The students at our school are almost all (88%) English Language Learners. They come from impoverished, but loving homes, where parents are trying their hardest to create better lives for their children. Our school is in a very poor neighborhood where violence and hardship are commonplace. But, in spite of it all, we are all working hard together to educate these spirited young people because they are worth it!
My Project
The resources that I am requesting will help create a rich and hands-on learning experience for my students. Part of the third grade curriculum in social studies is to learn about geography and communities. Given that most of my students have never been out of their neighborhood, it is very hard to imagine what the rest of the world is like. I would like to have 20 interactive world desk maps and 20 U.S. maps that will allow them to learn, hands-on, more about the world in which they live. I also need large maps that I can use to guide them. I would like an easel so I can guide instruction. The Weekly Readers for each student will provide up-to-date information and articles on a wide array of topics all across the globe. I know that the more hands-on the learning is, the more accessible and fun it is for the students. I want all of my students to know and understand the world in which they live.
This project is so important because these children are the future of our country.
They must have an understanding and appreciation of the local and global community in which they live.
