I am a third grade teacher in the South Bronx. All of my children receive free lunch and most come from families on public assistance. My class needs a globe. I am always shocked when I simply ask "where do you live?" I usually get New York, but that is where it stops. My students have a hard time looking on a flat map and seeing New York State as part of the US . They can't visualize North America or South America on a flat map, or how the continents are related to each other in the world. I need a globe in the classroom so they can see the shape of the world and how different countries are related . When we are reading about different parts of the world, they can look on the globe and see where these places are. Today I asked a child where London was during a small reading group. The answer I received was New Jersey. When I showed him the location on my map, he still didn't really understand where it was located . If I had a globe I think it could have made it much clearer for him. Please help my third graders figure out where in the world they are.
