Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello, I am a second grade teacher in a low socio economic public school in Wisconsin. It has been a very exciting start to the 2009-2010 school year! My students are curious, spirited and very eager to learn. I am energized by their curiosity!

Many of my students do not have an opportunity to travel. I would like to teach my students about the United States in a hands on manner. While books are an important resource,I think that children will respond in different ways when they are actively engaged using various sources. Using a variety of resources will encourage my students to be critical thinkers and problem solvers. This would also be an interesting, engaging way for the students to work together as teams.

I will need white boards, dry erase markers, overhead maps, and a floor U.S map puzzle. These resources will provide a way for students to experiment with reading skills, written communication, map skills, cooperative learning, and organization skills. The use of white boards will also enable me to easily provide feedback to students. Students will also be able to provide feedback to one another via the white boards.

Your generous donation will empower my students to learn more about themselves as learners;as well as about the country in which they live. My students will be inspired to learn and see our great nation. I hope that a project like this will reinforce the self-confidence of my students. Imagine the excitement that my students will feel when they learn about a new locale!
